LEARN THIS:
You can find definitions almost anywhere. The standard practice would be to look them up in the textbook. But you can always do the same on a computer or even using your phone. There are a lot of great online dictionaries but my preferred method is to type in “define” and the word that I am looking for right then. Google automatically gives you a few definitions and if you don’t like it then there’s still the list of websites where the information can be found.
Make sure that when looking for definitions you are careful of context. This means the circumstances of how we’re going to use the words. Consider the word “delta” as an example. If I type in “define delta” to Google then it gives me two definitions:
- The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet (Δ, δ), transliterated as “d.”.
- A triangular tract of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river.
Which one I need depends on the context. If studying geography then the second would be more appropriate. If you’re the cultural aspects of college fraternities or sororities then the first would be more appropriate. If studying ancient Greece then again which is appropriate would depend on the context.
